The Accidental Homeschool Mom- My Short Story

I never dreamed of homeschooling my daughter and it was never on my list of to-dos. I have a deep admiration for families who know that there was no other option for them or that they would homeschool up to a certain grade. My plan was to send my daughter Gia to a good Christian school close to home and enter the workforce.

Workforce Here I Come?
I was ready to dive into my profession and job hunting became my full-time job. I should mention that a few years prior, a friend of mine encouraged me to homeschool my daughter. She had homeschooled her five kids and raved about the character-building experience it had been for her and her children. I thanked her for the advice and went on my merry way, still planning to send Gia to the local Christian school. At that time, I was not in the frame of mind to teach my own child, even though I was a seasoned educator for almost two decades. Also, I doubted we could handle such a giant task financially, there would be a loss of potential income. I am so glad that God had other plans.
Change of heart and mind
As the time approached for Gia to go to school, I was feeling unsettled and started wondering if I was making the right decision. I prayed about it and spoke to my husband. After a short time, I decided that homeschooling would work best for us, at least for a short time. At least, that was what I thought. Here we are, more than 5 years later, and it is still one of the best decisions that I have made regarding the education and training of my daughter. We have our challenges, but God is faithful!
Priceless Learning Experience
I wouldn't trade a moment of the experience for anything in this world. I absolutely love that I get all of her firsts: first steps, first book, first math problem, first science experiment, first presentation, first Bible study, first friend, first building blocks projects, first solving a problem without my help, etc. The reason why I homeschool my daughter is found in Luke 2:52, "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." I claim this promise for her and myself. May you be blessed as you homeschool your children for God's honor and glory.
